Our History
1926
A Business Is Born
In 1926, the trading name of “Gill & Co” was registered by Lynnwood Lawrence Gill and one of Queensland’s most respected family businesses was born.
1935
Purchased A Sawmill
The business prospered and was sufficiently profitable to enable the purchase of a sawmill at Roseberry, just north of Kyogle in Northern NSW. This took place in about 1935. The war years were spent in production of timbers for the various Government Departments permitted by law to buy it, no sales being made to private individuals.
1950
Business Expansion
The sawmill was sold to Hancock and Gore Ltd in about 1950, the funds generated being used in expansion of the merchant side of business. The site of the previous yard at 1421 Ipswich Road, Rocklea, was purchased between 1950 and 1952, and was an area of nearly 3 acres. However, much of the land was low lying and subject to flooding.
1950
John Joins The Business
Lynnwood’s son, John, joined the business in about 1950.
1960
Cleveland Yard Is Built
In 1960, another yard was established at Cleveland, on the corner of Princess and Bloomfield Streets, with an area of approximately 3.5 acres, and with a building 300 feet long and 100 feet wide, enabling most of the stock to be left under cover. This was also an instant success, as it was the only timber yard for 10-15 miles.
1967
Yard Completed
Accordingly over the next 15 years as money was available, filling was purchased, raising the land to an acceptable level. Around 1967, part of the land was resumed by the Main Roads Department of Queensland for the Ipswich Road Overpass, and at that time the filling and fencing of the yard was completed. The establishment of the yard enabled the business to further expand.
1992
David Joins The Company
John has now passed his legacy on to his son David, who joined in 1992 and today is the Managing Director of the company.
