Why Choose Spotted Gum?

QLD SPOTTED GUM

Spotted Gum is an extremely common timber used in Brisbane and across Australia due to it’s Class 1 durability ranking. Spotted Gum is sourced from four different species of timber which grow along the east coast of Australia, and is environmentally friendly as it is generally plantation grown.

Spotted Gum trees grow 20m to 45m high and at these heights typically have a trunk of about 1.3m in diameter. They have smooth bark that sheds in places to give the trees their characteristic spotted appearance. Spotted Gum will grow in drier areas and is often found in areas where shale and slate are geographic features.

A favourite with many Australians, it is known for its distinctive look and characteristics. And for it’s colour variations that can range from a dark chocolate brown to a pale brown. It is used mainly for decking, landscaping, railings, flooring, posts and outdoor flooring. Due to it’s durability however it can be used for heavy duty industrial structures such as bridges, railroad sleepers, cladding and even wharfs.

It also has a moderately course texture and a typically wavy grain. Spotted Gum is favoured because of this wavy grain, which can produce an attractive fiddle-back figure. Care needs to be taken in drying Spotted gum for internal applications as the coarse nature of the timber can create surface checking if dried too quickly or too far.

Spotted Gum is an excellent choice for bushfire prone areas and is an extremely adaptable and naturally strong timber. It accepts oil and stain well and has a lower tannin content than other native species. This makes it less likely to bleed-through.
