In 1926, the trading name of “Gill & Co” was registered by Lynnwood Lawrence Gill and one of Queensland’s most respected family businesses was born. His legacy was passed on to his son John and now lives on today with his grandson David, who proudly offers three generations of knowledge in the timber industry, with service second to none. After more than 90 years, Lynnwood Gill’s founding principal of ‘specialist advice at a competitive price’ still lives on today with David Gill and his team of experienced staff at Gill & Co Timber Brisbane.

The business prospered and was sufficiently profitable to enable the purchase of a sawmill at Roseberry, just north of Kyogle in Northern NSW. This took place in about 1935. The war years were spent in production of timbers for the various Government Departments permitted by law to buy it, no sales being made to private individuals.

The sawmill was sold to Hancock and Gore Ltd in about 1950, the funds generated being used in expansion of the merchant side of business. The site of the previous yard at 1421 Ipswich Road, Rocklea, was purchased between 1950 and 1952, and was an area of nearly 3 acres. However, much of the land was low lying and subject to flooding.

Accordingly over the next 15 years as money was available, filling was purchased, raising the land to an acceptable level. Around 1967, part of the land was resumed by the Main Roads Department of Queensland for the Ipswich Road Overpass, and at that time the filling and fencing of the yard was completed. The establishment of the yard enabled the business to further expand.

In 1960, another yard was established at Cleveland, on the corner of Bloomfield and Russell Streets, with an area of approximately 3 acres, and with a building 300 feet long and 100 feet wide, enabling most of the stock to be left under cover. This was also an instant success, as it was the only timber yard for 10-15 miles. We now employ over 15 people as opposed to 3 to 4 in the old premises.

At Cleveland, the range is very wide and includes Pine, Hardwood and Cypress framing, Radiata Pine and Meranti Mouldings of all shapes and sizes, Particle Board, Dowels, Hardboard, Plaster Board, Plywood, Pre-primed Fascia and Doors, etc and an extensive range of timber related hardware. Roof trusses and prefabricated wall frames are also available. We deliver all over South East Queensland.

Another aspect of our business is the vast number of contacts that have been built up and handed from father to son in those 60 years. Our knowledge of who does what in our industry is second to none.

Lynnwood’s son, John, joined the business in about 1950 and has now passed his legacy on to his son David, who joined in 1992 and today is the Managing Director of the company.  David’s wife Rebecca, who has been working in the business for over 13 years, manages the Cleveland site.

As you can see Gill & Co has passed down generations and generations of knowledge to their team of experts who are ready to help you get building today.

Our policy is to stock only the best products available and sell at a competitive price, and as a result we have many, many happy customers.
